What kind of organization is PEIR and why is it different from other senior learning groups?

PEIR is a membership non-profit organization that seeks to fulfill the intellectual and social needs of older adults.

PEIR differs from other senior learning organizations in two important ways.

Principally, we give lectures to each other, thereby offering members the opportunity to learn while preparing their lecture.

Additionally, we believe in the importance of social interactions and friendships among members and making the experience more fun and emotionally supportive.

History

PEIR was established within Hofstra University’s Continuing Education Department some 47 years ago.

When COVID occurred, we discontinued our in-person classes at Hofstra and only Zoomed our presentations.

We recently returned to Hofstra for our Monday presentations, at the invitation of the School of Health Sciences, as part of their initiative to make Hofstra an Age Friendly University.

We also make our Tuesday in-person presentations at the Plainview Library and our Thursday in-person presentations at the Oceanside JCC.

Simply Put…

  • We are a diverse group of retired or semi-retired individuals who are interested in lifelong learning and socializing.

  • We meet for lectures, informal discussions, luncheons and outings in order to stay informed, engaged and have fun.

  • Listen or attend as many or as few as you wish.

  • Some of our members have been participating in PEIR for up to thirty years.

  • All newcomers are welcome.

  • Members become like family.

  • Check us out by attending our lectures.  You’ll quickly be convinced that PEIR will be a valuable addition to your life.
